40-year-old Bluemel announced his resignation “from all positions with immediate effect”, not only from his position in the government, but also from the position of head of the OeVP structures in Vienna, as he will be temporarily replaced by Karl Mehrer, a member of the National Assembly, reporting on the Kurier portal .

He explained that there were two main reasons for his decision. The first for family reasons – on September 30 he became a father for the second time. The second reason – he is one of Kurz’s closest confidants, who announced his exit from politics on the same day.

According to Courier, Bluemel made the decision in no time, “even those closest to Bluemel only found out about his resignation Thursday evening.” No further plans have been reported yet.

In a video posted to Facebook, Bluemel said he had received “death threats”. He also stressed that Kurz’s decision on Thursday was for him the “last impetus” in making his decision, and that the many years of cooperating with the former chancellor “was a great honour”.

Against Bluemel, as well as against Kurz, there is an ongoing prosecutor’s investigation into suspected corruption.

On the other hand, Schallenberg, who was chancellor on October 11, announced Thursday night that he will resign from his position “as soon as the party determines the appropriate course.”

“With 52 days in this position, Schallenberg will be the shortest-serving chancellor in history,” Vienna Online points out and notes that from the start, Schallenberg was expected to be a deputy rather than a true successor to Kurz.

On Thursday morning, the daily Kronen Zeitung estimated that the departure of Kurz, who took over the party leadership in 2017, would lead to changes in the government. Schallenberg’s departure has been assumed as the most likely scenario. Karl Nehamer, the current head of the State Department, has been nominated as the new OeVP President and Counsellor.
