List of earthquake regions (India) in India

An earthquake is a vibration of the Earth’s surface caused by the flexibility or static modification of the subsurface rocks. It may happen due to human as well as natural activities.

Did you know that before an earthquake hits a region, the amount of radon gas in the atmosphere increases for that region? The rise of radon indicates that the area will be affected by an earthquake. Various studies have been conducted and have concluded that elevated radon concentrations in soil or groundwater could be signs of an imminent earthquake.

The point where an earthquake waves (the epicenter) is called the “epicenter” of an earthquake is located below the surface of the earth. Whereas, the place which is located perpendicular to the focus, on the surface of the earth where the tremors were felt for the first time is called the “epicenter”. Energy dispersed from focus is known as “elastic energy”.

What are the earthquake waves?

The waves generated during an earthquake are known as earthquake waves. They are classified into 3 types:

1. Initial or longitudinal waves are also known as P waves: they are longitudinal waves similar to sound waves.

2. Secondary or transverse waves are also known as S waves: they are transverse waves similar to light waves.

3. Surface or long-term waves are also known as L-waves: they originate at “P” waves on the surface.

What is the seismometer?

The seismic device, which helps to measure the intensity of an earthquake, is called seismic measurement. Various seismometers are: the Russian Forl scale, the Mercury scale, and the Richter scale.

Moreover, let us tell you that the lines that join the areas of seismic intensity are called isosian lines, and the lines that connect places that suffer from earthquake tremors at the same time are known as the humizal lines.

List of earthquake regions (India) in India

Based on past seismic history, the Bureau of Indian Standards has grouped the country into four seismic regions – second, second, third, fourth, and fifth region. Of all these four regions, Region-V is the region with the most seismic activity while Zone 2 is the lowest.

The second region covers the remaining parts of the country.

The seismic zoning map of India helps identify the most dangerous, moderate and earthquake-prone regions in India. Also, these maps are used or viewed before building a tall building to check the level of seismology in any given area. In the long run, this helps save lives.

So you may now have recognized the earthquake regions (India) in India.
