3 dead and thousands affected by the Guatemala earthquake, which caused landslides

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck western Guatemala early Wednesday (February 16) causing damage to nearly 25,000 people and causing three fatal heart attacks, authorities said.

The epicenter of the quake, which struck at a depth of 84 km, was in the coastal region of Escuintla, less than 100 km southwest of the capital, Guatemala City.

The US Geological Survey said an earthquake of magnitude 6.2, although Guatemalan authorities estimated it to be stronger, at 6.8, followed by an aftershock of 4.8.

The quake triggered landslides on roads, damaged homes and cut power, affecting some 31,300 people, according to rescue services.

Three women died of heart attacks, and officials linked the quake without specifying how they were related.

A 50-year-old woman died in the village of Mixco, west of the capital. The other two women, whose age authorities have not disclosed, were in the northern province of Baja Verapaz and the western city of Quetzaltenango.

The quake was felt as far away as El Salvador, southeastern Guatemala and southern Mexico.

Firefighters also reported a landslide on the road from the capital to Antigua, Guatemala’s main tourist city.

The Central American country is located at the meeting point of three tectonic plates in an area prone to earthquakes.

Last year, more than 125 earthquakes were recorded in Guatemala, with no deaths or serious damage.
