Netflix announces four new comedy specials produced by Dave Chappelle

Netflix announced Friday that it will release four new comedy specials hosted and produced by comedian Dave Chappelle.

The series, dubbed “Chappelle’s Home Team,” will begin broadcasting on the platform on February 28. It will also feature several comics, including Earthquake and Donnell Rawlings, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time and comedians like Quake and Donnell are not only friends but have inspired my career,” Chappelle said. “Anyone in the comedy community knows these names and knows their time to shine is long overdue. I am proud to be a part of this moment.”

Chappelle reportedly produced the series Specials alongside Stan Lathan. The news outlet noted that Chappelle, Lathan, Earthquake, Ricky Hughes and Jermaine Smith are listed as executive producers on the project.

Chappelle was at the center of controversy last year over his former Netflix special “The Closer,” which drew backlash for its derision of the transgender community.

At the time, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos came to Chappelle’s defense, saying the streaming platform “has a strong belief that on-screen content does not directly translate into real-world harm.”

After a backlash from company employees and various other parties, he later apologized, saying he screwed up the matter.

“What I should have driven in those emails is humanity,” Sarandos said at the time. “I should have recognized the fact that a group of our employees were really in pain.”

Chappelle is also set to headline the Netflix Comedy Festival in April.
