The 45-meter bell tower in Pocahyahu Park has been closed since February as an earthquake risk.

A detailed seismic evaluation found that the weakest ring around 74 heavy bells at the top of Carillon.

“The main problems identified in the detailed seismic assessment were the bell tires,” Prodi Stubbs, director of T Bay Mahara, said in a statement.

“Now that we have a better understanding of the risks posed by the earthquake, we are exploring options to manage risks to employees and the public in an acceptable manner so that we can reopen the building.”

At the same time, he said, the Ministry of Culture and Heritage is exploring options to strengthen the earthquake.

The Wellington City Council told the ministry in August 2019 that a building notice of earthquake exhibition should be placed in the memorial.

However, the ministry did not inform the public and did not close the building until February this year.

“Ideally, we want to strengthen the tower into a new building,” the ministry told RNZ in February.
