Teenage defender of earthquakes speaks against racism

SAN JOSE – A promising teenager in earthquakes, Jacob Akanerej, has joined the growing discourse about social injustice in America following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Akanerej, 18, said a statement was posted on the earthquake website.

Akanyirige, a 11-foot 5-foot defender from Pleasanton, signed with San Jose in 2017 as a 15-year-old local player.

“In the past few weeks, the whole world has witnessed the killing of Ahmed Arberry and George Floyd,” the statement continued. “A black man was killed for being black, and after a few weeks the same thing happened again.

“This is a dangerous cycle that has been going on for hundreds of years in America and all over the world. We all need and deserve change in this world and we are the only ones who can make it happen. Nobody should be treated differently, let alone lose their lives just because of their looks.

“But at the end of the day, I’m still a black person in this country and I’m proud of it and I’m not going to face it in any other way.”

Akanyiridge made four appearances last season for the United United League team Reno 1868 FC in San Jose. The MLS Seismic Team has not yet appeared in MLS but participated in a friendly match in San Jose.

His parents are Emmanuel and Margaret Akanridge from Ghana. Big Sister Precious Akaneridge played at Baylor University.
