Magnitude 5.8 earthquake strikes Yabin Islands, Papua

JAKARTA (Antara) – An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck northeastern Yabin Islands in Papua on Sunday at 12:49 WIB.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the quake’s epicenter was located at 1.24 degrees south latitude and 137.04 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 10 kilometers and about 111 kilometers northeast of the Yabin Islands.

The earthquake had no potential for a subsequent tsunami, and was felt at II and III MMI (modified Mercalli intensity) in Biak, and III MMI at Sirui, Papua.

Based on the MMI scale, the II MMI means that the earthquake is felt only by a small number of people at rest, especially on the higher floors of buildings. Accurately suspended objects may swing.

III MMI means that people feel the earthquake very noticeably indoors, especially on the higher floors of buildings: many people don’t recognize it as an earthquake. Parked cars may shake slightly. The vibrations are like the passing of a truck, with an estimate of the duration.

The Meteorological Agency reminded residents of the Yabin islands to remain alert for possible aftershocks.
