The capital of the Northern Territory was hit by an earthquake that lasted half a minute.

Darwin was hit by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake that shook buildings across the Northern Territory capital.

Locals reported feeling tremors for about 30 seconds after 12 noon on Friday local time.

The earthquake occurred 140 km in East Timor.

The Bureau of Meteorology told concerned local residents that there was no danger of a tsunami as a result of the earthquake.

GeoScience Australia reported that the earthquake was at a depth of 28 km.

There have been over 500 “poetry” reports so far.

Shaken locals quickly took to social media to share their shock, after seeing buildings move and the ground shake for about half a minute.

One posted on Facebook, “Wow, I felt like the Earth was moving here in Darwin! An earthquake just rocked our office building here in Casuarina.”

Another said, “There’s just been an earthquake in Darwin. Just a small tremor, nothing too serious.”

Another commented, “The house here in Darwin was shaking! Hoping the people in Timor wouldn’t have been so badly damaged in that earthquake.”
