Australia, China, Britain, Taiwan and more provide aid to Afghanistan after the devastating earthquake

Countries around the world – including Australia, China, Taiwan, Britain, Pakistan and Qatar – have responded to faltering calls for humanitarian assistance in the wake of the 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Afghanistan on June 22, which left more than 1,150 dead.

The deadliest earthquake in 20 years hit the impoverished region of Ghayan in southern Afghanistan, near the Pakistani border.

In the days that followed, China pledged $7.5 million in aid, along with tents, towels and beds, while Britain pledged $3 million, Taiwan $1 million, and the European Union more than $1 million. Critical supplies were shipped from Pakistan, Qatar, Uzbekistan and Iran almost immediately, while Australia promised A$1 million for emergency relief.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in a press release: β€œThe earthquake has taken a heavy toll on lives, homes and livelihoods, and the full impacts are yet to be determined. This tragedy comes at a time when the humanitarian needs in Afghanistan are greater than ever.”

Meanwhile, India has sent a technical team to Kabul, along with 27 tons of supplies.

It is expected that donor funds and relief materials will be distributed through the United Nations and other humanitarian organizations on the ground, with the support of the Taliban, the hardline Islamist movement that has ruled Afghanistan since the middle of last year.

The militant group has so far pledged to provide 1 billion Afghanis for the earthquake victims.

The devastation in Afghanistan in the aftermath of the 6.1 magnitude earthquake is heartbreaking.

My condolences to the people of Afghanistan and the Afghan Australian community, who have lost so many brothers and sisters today.

Australia will work with partners to respond to this crisis.

The United States is notably absent from the list of countries providing assistance.

Last year, the United States imposed sanctions on Afghanistan after the Taliban forcibly took over the country, including freezing the assets of the Central Bank of Afghanistan. While some money has since been released β€” specifically to be spent among American victims of terrorism and humanitarian efforts β€” many restrictions remain in place.

“In these times of testing, we call on the US to release frozen Afghan assets and lift sanctions on Afghan banks so that aid agencies can easily deliver aid to Afghanistan,” Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaki said on Saturday, according to VOA News.

Before the Taliban seized power, about 75% of Afghanistan’s public spending budget was funded by the United States and other Western countries. After the takeover, funding was largely cut as the international community struggled to limit Taliban control, citing fears of misuse.

However, some humanitarian aid continued, with the United States continuing to be the largest donor.

By the end of this year, the United Nations estimates that 97% of Afghanistan’s 40 million people will live below the global poverty line on less than $1.90 a day. Aid organizations fear that the most vulnerable are vulnerable to delays in education and health care due to earthquake-damaged roads, water, and sanitation facilities.

The United Nations humanitarian agency specifically warned of a possible outbreak of cholera.
