Tsunami will reach Seattle in minutes after earthquake: study

Washington state officials have urged Seattle residents to prepare for a tsunami, even though the last known earthquake at the Seattle Fault occurred about 1,100 years ago.

SEATTLE – Tsunami waves from a 7.5 earthquake at the Seattle Fault will only take minutes to reach the greater Seattle area, according to a newly released study.

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) released the new study Thursday and urged Seattle residents to prepare, even though the last known earthquake at the Seattle Fault occurred about 1,100 years ago.

“Although the chances of this happening in our lifetimes are low, it is important that families prepare now,” said Maximilian Dixon, director of the Hazards and Awareness Program for the Washington Department of Emergency Management. “The ground shaking will warn you of a possible tsunami on the way. Make sure you know where the nearest high ground is and the quickest way to get there.”

The tsunami waves will reach the shoreline in less than three minutes in many places on the eastern side of Bainbridge Island, around Elliott Bay and Alki Point, according to the study by geologists within the Washington Department of Geological Survey at DNR.

The study also found that floods from such a tsunami could exceed 20 feet along the Seattle coast. DNR said the study found that waves could travel up to 3 miles inland in the port of Tacoma, although flooding would be less than in previous studies.

The floods from the tsunami would be greater near the Seattle Fault, but the new study showed coastal flooding and increased currents throughout the Salish Sea, from Blaine to Olympia.

The earthquake scenario used in the modeling is a “very large, low probability” magnitude 7.5 earthquake on the Seattle Fault, which runs east-west through Puget Sound and downtown Seattle. The fault has caused several documented earthquakes, according to DNR.

DNR said the model does not take into account tidal phases or local tsunamis caused by landslides triggered by the earthquake.

Most often, when we think of tsunamis, we think of our offshore coast and our communities along the Pacific Ocean. “There is a long history of earthquakes on faults in Puget Sound,” said Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz. “While the history of earthquakes and tsunamis along the Seattle Fault is less frequent than the Cascadia subduction zone, the impacts can be enormous. That is why it is so important that these communities have the information they need to prepare and respond.”

The study was conducted to help local and state officials develop tsunami response and preparedness plans.

DNR provides many resources for families to prepare in the event of an earthquake. In the event of an earthquake, it is safer to fall, cover and hold, and then evacuate to higher ground to get as far inside as possible.

The recent earthquake was strong enough to move the beach at Restoration Point on Bainbridge Island up by 23 feet and land at West Point in Seattle by 3 feet.

DNR said the upcoming earthquake could create new coastlines at several locations near the fault line.
