More than 1,000 kiwis across the South Island reported feeling a late-night earthquake originating in Fiordland on Saturday.

People as far north as Greymouth reported feeling a 5.2-magnitude earthquake in Fiordland late Saturday night.

GeoNet reported that the moderate earthquake struck 40 km northwest of Te Anau at 11.20 pm at a depth of 55 km.

More than 100 people, mostly in Queenstown, reported feeling a moderate concussion, while more than 704 people felt a slight movement.
