Annual earthquake drilling will happen BC

Workout will begin at 10:20 AM on October 20; Squamish’s emergency alert system will be tested during county-wide exercises.

BC’s largest earthquake drill takes place on Thursday, October 20 at 10:20 a.m., and Squamish is back in action.

The Great Earthquake Shake Training is conducted annually to remind British Columbia residents to fall, cover, and hold on in the event of a major earthquake. This year’s Squamish exercise will include a test of the SquamishAlert emergency notification system for all participating residents.

Megan Latimer, director of public safety for the Squamish District, said in a press release.

“We encourage all residents to build or upgrade their emergency kits, understand the risks, and develop a contingency plan with their families to ensure they are well-equipped within the first 72 hours of any natural disaster.”

According to the statement, about 7,025 people have already registered with SquamishAlert, the local emergency alert system. Provides emergency information and advice by voice, email and text.

Mountain FM will be broadcasting an audio simulation of an earthquake around 10:20 a.m. and district personnel will be present at all municipal buildings.
