Tsunami warning lifted after 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit Tonga

The Tonga government asked its citizens to move inland early Saturday (November 12) after a 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit the sea about 211 kilometers from the capital, despite a tsunami warning issued for Tonga and American Samoa.

The quake was 24.8 kilometers deep and struck the sea about 211 kilometers east-southeast of Niavo, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

“Based on all available data, the tsunami threat from this earthquake is now gone,” the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The country’s National Emergency Management Agency said on Twitter, that there is no tsunami risk for New Zealand.

The Tonga Meteorological Service continued to warn residents to stay indoors and on higher ground.

“Please stay indoors and on higher ground and please listen to the radio until you are advised. For sailors, stay away from the reefs to the depths of the ocean,” she said on her Facebook page.

In January, the eruption of the Hongja Tonga-Hunga Hapai volcano triggered a tsunami that devastated villages and resorts and cut communications in the South Pacific nation of about 105,000 people. At least three people were killed.
