6.0 magnitude earthquake hits southern Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Mexico Sunday morning, sending worried residents of the capital onto the streets.

The USGS said the quake’s epicenter was 2.5 miles (4 km) northwest of Coral Falso in the southern state of Guerrero. The region is located along Mexico’s Pacific coast between the beach resorts of Acapulco and Zihuatenejo.

There were no immediate reports on the extent of the damage. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said via Twitter that civil defense was checking the damage.

López Obrador later posted a video on Twitter of a live conversation with Guerrero State Governor Evelyn Salgado, in which she said there were no reports of damage or injuries.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said there had been no reports of any incidents in the capital.
