A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Pacific nation of Vanuatu late Sunday, the US Geological Survey said, prompting a tsunami warning for the region.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred around 11:30 p.m. local time (1230 GMT) at a depth of about 27 kilometers (17 miles), and placed it 25 kilometers from the village of Port Olry.

“Tsunamis of up to 0.3 to 1 meter above tide level are possible on some coasts of Vanuatu,” the NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said.

She added that waves of less than 0.3 meters were possible in New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands.

Vanuatu is part of the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, where tectonic plates collide, and is subject to frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

The Solomon Islands, a neighboring island nation north of Vanuatu, was hit in November by a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake, though there were no reports of serious injuries or significant structural damage.

Witnesses reported violent tremors that threw objects to the ground and caused power outages in parts of the capital, Honiara.

Coastal regions of Vanuatu and neighboring Papua New Guinea have been placed on alert for tsunamis of up to 30 cm (12 in).
