Is Illinois expecting a major earthquake?

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (WTVO) — With February being National Earthquake Awareness Month, the Illinois Emergency Management System thinks it’s a great time to remind Illinois residents to prepare for a potential earthquake.

“Illinois is located between the New Madrid Fault Zone and the Wabash Valley earthquake zone,” explained Alicia Tate-Nadeau, Illinois Emergency Management Agency Administrator. “I want everyone to understand the risks and know what to do if we have a major earthquake.”

The agency began its annual earthquake preparedness exercise, The Great ShakeOut, after activity near the New Madrid seismic area, which stretches from southern Illinois to the south and west, in 2019.

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake recorded from the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone, along the border of southeastern Illinois and southwestern Indiana, in 2008.

The largest earthquake ever recorded in Illinois was a magnitude 5.4 earthquake in 1968.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) says there is up to a 40% chance of a major earthquake in Illinois.

“Standard homeowners’ insurance policies generally do not cover earthquake damage,” said Dana Bobish-Severinghouse, director of the Illinois Department of Insurance. “However, Illinois consumers can purchase earthquake coverage as an endorsement of an existing homeowner’s policy. Like other types of insurance, coverage costs will vary depending on the home’s structure, age, location, and potential earthquake hazards in the area.”

Great ShakeOut Drill Day is October 19, and IEMA encourages schools, workplaces, and individuals to sign up for the program.
