Turkish Airlines has introduced an upgrade for earthquake rescue dogs

Larger dogs traveling on planes are usually required to fly in the cargo hold of planes, but some dogs that travel on Turkish Airlines have recently received serious VIP treatment — and for very good reason.

Turkish Airlines confirmed to Thrillist that Turkish Airlines has been treating rescue dogs helping in Turkey’s earthquake recovery efforts to cabin upgrades (and in some cases, business class) for their flights back to their home countries.

Late last month, Twitter users first began spotting cabin-flying rescue dogs, and they’ve been crediting Turkish Airlines for their treatment of the important pups, who are trained to rescue people from disaster zones.

The airline said in a statement provided to Thrillist that this treatment was “the least we can do to show our appreciation for the loyal and heroic efforts of these heroic dogs.”

“Since we are going through an extraordinary period within our evacuations due to earthquakes that were concentrated in our eastern regions and affected all of our countries and our nation, we are flying our heroes and rescue teams with their dogs, who are allowed to sit in the cabin (also in business class) for this period,” she said.
