A magnitude 4.6 earthquake was detected north of Edmonton

The Canadian Seismological Corporation confirmed the detection of a 4.6-magnitude earthquake that struck the Peace River area on Thursday morning.

The seismic event was recorded at 8:46 am at a depth of five kilometers. A secondary statement from Earthquakes Canada said the quake occurred 30 km east of Reno, a small village about 45 km southeast of Peace River. Reno is located about 461 km northwest of Edmonton.

In an update Thursday morning, Earthquake Canada downgraded the quake’s rating from 5.0 to 4.6, adding that there were no reports of damage and that Albertans “lightly felt” the quake.

The area has been a hotbed of earthquakes recently after a record-breaking 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook the region in November 2022. Scientists who study the phenomena said the area is known for seismic activity, but research is needed to determine if there was any particular event.
