Ghana holds a state funeral for soccer player Christian Atsu after the earthquake in Turkey

A state funeral was held on Friday in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, in honor of footballer Christian Atsu, who died in the earthquake that struck Turkey last month.

The ceremony, which was chaired by Head of State Nana Akufo-Addo, took place in the presence of the family of the deceased and also his former colleagues, who wore a T-shirt with his doll, and many fans who paraded in front of the coffin. Covered in Ghana colors and set under a white tent.

Christian Atsu died at the age of 31 in the powerful earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on February 6, claiming more than 50,000 lives. He has been playing with Hatay (Turkish First Division) since last September, based in Antakya (South), near the epicenter.

After two weeks of searching, his body was found on February 18 among the rubble of the building where he lived.

During his career, the Ghanaian international (65 caps), also known in his country for his charitable activities, played in England, Chelsea and Newcastle, or FC Porto.

He will be buried in Ada, his hometown in southeastern Ghana.
