There is no risk of a tsunami for New Zealand after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of the North Island on Monday.

The quake occurred in the sea near the Kermadec Islands, 1,025 kilometers northeast of Whangarei, GeoNet reports.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said it was assessing whether the quake would trigger tsunamis that could affect New Zealand.

Just before 1pm, Nima said there was no threat of a tsunami in mainland New Zealand.

It struck at 12.41 pm, at a depth of 33 km.

GeoNet described the quake as M6.8 and “unnoticeable,” yet five people in Aotearoa reported feeling it so far.

“Anyone near the coast who has felt a prolonged earthquake or thread should move immediately to the nearest elevation, or as far inland as possible,” Nima said.

GeoNet only has five reports that “felt” it.

Nehme said the quake had a magnitude of 7.3 and a depth of 10 kilometers.

The New Zealand government has operated a staffed station on Raoul Island, in the Kermadec Islands region, since 1937, but a Department of Conservation spokesperson said no DOC staff is currently on the island.

In March, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck near the Kermadec Islands, but there was no danger of a tsunami on mainland New Zealand.
