Turkey gifts a puppy to Mexico after a rescue dog went missing on duty in the earthquake

The Mexican military welcomed a new search puppy, which was given from Turkey on Wednesday after a Mexican rescue dog died in the line of duty helping find survivors of February’s devastating earthquake near the Syrian border.

The three-month-old German Shepherd will join Mexico’s famous canine unit, which specializes in helping locate survivors in a country prone to earthquakes and other natural disasters.

The black and beige ball of fur with soft ears and huge paws was named “Arkadas” – meaning “friend” in Turkish – after an online vote.

The Army said Arcadas will be trained by the same trainer who took care of Proteo, a rescue dog who died on assignment in Turkey.

Mexico deployed rescue dogs in Turkey after the 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook a vast area near the southern border with Syria, killing at least 54,000 people in both countries.

Mexico honored the Proteo, who is also a German Shepherd, with a military funeral earlier this year.

Dressed in green quilted shorts with a small Mexican flag on it, Arcadas was welcomed into the force in an official ceremony at a military base in Mexico City on Wednesday, joined by his new canine and human colleagues.

The excited puppy barked as Mexico’s national anthem blared from the speakers.

“Thanks to my friends from Mexico who welcomed me with such affection, I promise to do my best to be an amazing search and rescue dog,” the Mexican Ministry of Defense said in a tweet on behalf of Arcadas.
