But now, a new study from the University of California, San Diego, Scripps and San Diego State shows how the drying up of the Salton Sea may keep populations safe by warding off California’s next major earthquake, often called the “Big Earthquake.” The study linked the volume of water to the weight on the earth’s crust and the causes of subsequent earthquakes. Scientists said geological computer modeling links the water shortage with delaying the long-awaited catastrophic earthquake that seismologists have warned about.

“We think in part that one of the reasons it has been so long since the last major earthquake is that this area of ​​the Salton Basin region has not filled with water to the kind of volumes that we have seen in the historical past of ancient Lake Cahuila here,” said Matthew Weingarten, assistant professor in the Department of Geosciences at UT. San Diego State and one of the study’s authors.
