A strong earthquake hits Indonesia

JAKARTA: A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the western Indonesian province of Yogyakarta and damaged homes and buildings, the meteorological agency and an official said.

Dwikorita Karnawati, head of the country’s meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency, said on Friday that the agency had earlier issued the 6.4-magnitude quake before its review.

According to the agency, the earthquake did not cause giant waves.

The agency added that the quake occurred at 19:57 pm Jakarta time (1257 GMT), and its epicenter was located 86 km northwest of Bantul district, at a depth of 25 km under the sea floor.

The earthquake was also felt by residents in the neighboring provinces of Central Java and East Java, it added.

More than five aftershocks came after the main shock, Duikorita said, and she recommended people avoid entering their homes if their wall was shattered by the tremors.

Tremors triggered by the quake destroyed homes and a hospital in Yogyakarta province, said Andrew Sambudu, a senior member of the rapid response unit of the provincial disaster management and mitigation agency.

Roofs of houses in Bantul district were damaged. Roofs fell off. Besides, parts of the hospital walls sustained minor damage. He told Xinhua from Yogyakarta province that some houses along the coast sustained minor damage.
