“Earthquake Swarm” of nine earthquakes in 30 minutes shakes Rotorua

An “earthquake swarm” of nine earthquakes struck in 30 minutes Rotorua in the early hours of Monday.

GeoNet recorded four earthquakes in the region between 4.17 am and 4.36 am, but according to seismologist John Restau, “We have already observed nine within 30 minutes”.

He said that the earthquakes ranged from one to 2.2.

Three of the earthquakes had a strength of 2.2, and their depth was less than 5 km.

“This is actually not uncommon for Rotorua, what we call the Taupo volcanic area,” he said.

“An area where we get a lot of what we call earthquake swarms.”

Restau said the earthquakes were shallow and that “right under the city” was caused by a widespread feeling.

He said that the largest earthquake in the region was in Edgcombe in 1987, although he said that earthquake swarms similar to Monday’s earthquake occurred in August 2013 and June 2014.
