Wajima's beloved “Totoro” rock lost its left ear in the Noto earthquake

Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture — The left ear of Totoro-iwa (Totoro Rock), a very popular tourist spot here, has disappeared.

But there is no doubt about sabotage.

Officials say the most likely cause is the Jan. 1, 7.6 magnitude Noto Peninsula earthquake.

The official name of the rock is “Tsurugiji-gongen-iwa”. The rocker is popular due to his resemblance to the titular character in Studio Ghibli's animated film “My Neighbor Totoro.”

About 15 years ago, city officials decorated the rock with eyeballs made of rough rope to mimic Totoro's expressions, according to the Wajima City Tourism Department.

Located on the coast along Route 249, the city-run parking lot was packed with cars and motorcycles before the quake as tourists took photos of the symbol.

A tourism department official said: “Disaster damage is inevitable, but it is unfortunate that part of Totoro-Iwa collapsed. Our priority now is to support the earthquake victims, but we will consider restoration once the situation stabilizes.”
