Noto earthquake: Two months later, more than 11,000 people remain in evacuation shelters

Friday marks two months since the devastating earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula and surrounding areas in central Japan. More than 11,000 people are still living in temporary shelters due to their severely damaged homes and lack of infrastructure.

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck on New Year's Day. The cities of Wajima and Shika in Ishikawa Prefecture recorded tremors with a maximum magnitude of 7 on the Japanese scale. The earthquake also triggered a tsunami, destroying buildings and causing fires.

Ishikawa officials say 241 people have been confirmed dead in the prefecture due to the disaster, while seven others are still missing.

The number of people who took refuge in shelters reached 11,449 as of Thursday. Among them, 4,733 people have sought refuge in hotels and other accommodation facilities away from their original communities.

Many evacuees cannot return home because their tap water is out or their homes are not repaired. Others are waiting for temporary housing to be allocated to them.

Ishikawa officials say they will speed up work to restore water, roads and other damaged infrastructure. They say they will also speed up the construction of temporary housing.

Officials also say they want to allow volunteers and civilian employees from outside quake-hit areas who are supporting recovery efforts in the province to stay longer.

Many of them are currently only able to work for a limited period due to the lack of housing in which they can reside.
