And that increase is the inevitable trade-off of lifting restrictions to get the country back to work.

The opening of offices, pubs and restaurants will spread the virus further, even if everyone wears a mask and social distances.

What concerns us is the danger of overreacting by the government and Public Health England and what the current target is.

We were stuck to flatten the curve of new cases, not to eliminate them.

Yes, in July they went from one in 2,500 to one in 1,500, but that remains a minimal risk.

The two most important measures, hospitalizations and deaths, are very low and declining.

We won’t see Covid without a vaccine. So as long as the threat is still minimal, we have to live with it and rely on the best NHS precautions, tests, treatments and capabilities we have today.

We certainly can’t continue to lock down entire regions when cases increase a bit.

Lost jobs, failed businesses and shattered public confidence must be our greatest concern.

And the immediate priority, as the Prime Minister says, is to ensure the reopening of schools in September.

This is crucial. For children’s education and mental health and for the economy.

WORK absurdly claims that Rishi Sunak failed to grasp the magnitude of the Covid crisis is rank, empty opportunism.

It is an outright attempt to win the votes of whoever is now sacked, blaming the Chancellor instead of the pandemic.

Mr. Sunak will borrow $ 350 billion this year alone to try to save jobs. It is a staggering and unprecedented amount.

It is ludicrous of rookie Shadow Chancellor Anneliese Dodds to claim that he has failed to match the scale of the disaster. Or that he is making a historic mistake by phasing out the leave program.

How long would Labor pay people to stay home? What would they borrow? 1 trillion? 2 trillion? Is there a limit?

It will be years before they put behind them the youthful idiocy of the Corbyn era.

A little justice

NO short prison sentence would reflect the meanness of the three savage thugs who dragged PC Andrew Harper to his death.

But, as he could only convict for manslaughter, Judge Ediss’s sentences were extremely severe.
