Taiwanese pay tribute to former President Lee Teng-hui
TAIPEI, TAIWAN (AP) – Taiwanese leaders and their people were paying tribute Saturday to former President Lee Teng-hui, who died this week at the age of 97 after bringing full democracy to Taiwan and angering China in process.
A traditional funeral beer was set in the Taipei Guest House, a European-style decorated building that was the home of Japanese governors during Taiwan’s colonial period 1895-1945.
Among the visitors on Saturday was incumbent President Tsai Ing-wen, who wrote in a book of condolences, “I will forever keep an eye on Democratic Taiwan.”
Lee sought to create a unique, democratic identity for Taiwan, angering not only China, which considers the island part of its territory, but also members of his Nationalist Party who hoped to return victorious to the mainland.
Lee brought out in the first direct elections of the island in 1996 and other democratic changes in the self-governing island, despite rocket launches and other harsh destruction by China.
Taipei Veterans General Hospital said Lee died Thursday after suffering from infections, heart problems and organ failure since he was hospitalized in February.
Lee studied in Japan, spoke fluent Japanese, and tried to maintain the traditional ties between Tokyo and its former colonial rule.
Along with Tsai and Prime Minister Lai Ching-te, Japan’s main representative in Taiwan, Izumi Hiroyasu also thanked, reading in a statement that “Japan and Taiwan both lost a person who was very important to each other.”
“He laid the foundations for this free and democratic Taiwan today,” Hiroyasu said.
Hsu, a woman from the central city of Taichung, said she came to “express my gratitude and respect”.

The memorial will remain until August 16. No official word has been given on the funeral arrangements.
China, which often threw angry epithets at Lee for his promotion of Taiwan’s special status, has largely ignored his passing.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin on Friday responded only by saying “Taiwan’s independence is an impassable road. China’s national reunification and national renewal is a major historical trend and cannot be stopped by anyone or any force.”
Taiwanese sentiment opposing political union with China has risen to historic levels, and voters this year re-elected Tsai by a wide margin over its pro-China nationalist rival.
