The National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat across the Pacific from a strong earthquake that struck Papua New Guinea a short time ago. At 10:29 AM Hawaii time / 4:29 PM ET, a preliminary magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near Ambunti from a depth of 40 km.

“Based on all available data, a destructive tsunami is not expected throughout the Pacific Ocean,” the Hawaii-based Honolulu Tsunami Warning Center wrote in its latest media release on the quake. They added: “This will be the only statement that will be issued regarding this event unless additional data is received.”

If there had been a tsunami threat from this earthquake, warnings could have been issued for Hawaii, the United States, and the Canadian west coast.
