The Earth Sciences Council confirms that a mild earthquake occurred

The Council for Geosciences (CGS) has confirmed widespread speculation that a 1.4 magnitude earthquake occurred in Cape Town on Wednesday afternoon.

CGS, which monitors seismic wave activities across the country, said the seismic event occurred at around 5:37 p.m.

While there were no reports of injuries or damage to buildings, social media platforms were flooded with reports of loud bangs or booms being heard from parts of the city.

“The results of the analysis show that the earthquake registered a local magnitude of about 1.4, as recorded by the South African National Seismic Network (SANSN),” GCS spokesperson Mahlatse Mononela said in a statement.

“The epicenter of the earthquake was located along the Deep River near rural Milnerton.”

The Council also encouraged the public to register their experiences using the electronic questionnaire.

The City of Cape Town's Disaster Risk Management Department says they have launched an investigation following reports of an “earthquake-like event” along with a “loud sound or explosion” about 14 kilometers south of the Mother City at about 5:39pm on Wednesday.

'We are investigating; Ourselves and the fire services,” Charlotte Powell, a spokeswoman for the Department of Disaster Management, told News24.

Residents living near Milnerton and surrounding areas reported hearing windows shaking, and those living near Table View described hearing an explosion with a slight shaking.

A Landsdowne resident reported slight shaking and hearing a rumble. One resident said the sound sounded like a rumble and a blow from the ground could be felt. They said the entire ordeal lasted about two to five seconds.

Many people took to social media to express their concern about the unconfirmed earthquake they experienced.

“Yes, my daughter and I felt the earthquake at around 17:39” “Was it just me or was there some kind of earthquake phenomenon in Cape Town again?” “Earthquake in Cape Town Gardens a few minutes ago?”

“We are receiving early, unverified reports of ground shaking possibly due to seismic activity in or near Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa on March 27, 2024 at approximately 3:39 PM GMT,” Volcano Discovery said.

“The details of the earthquake (if it is an earthquake) are not yet known until confirmed by the earthquake agency, but the event has been reported.”

Just last month a 3.49 magnitude earthquake occurred off the West Coast.

Mahlatsi Mononela, spokesperson for the Earth Sciences Council, told News24 that no seismic activity was seen on their systems in or near Cape Town on Wednesday. On Wednesday, the systems recorded small seismic events in Viljoenskron, Grootvlei, Emalahleni and Fochville, but nothing in Cape Town.
