Aftershock earthquake shakes New Jersey – NBC10 Philadelphia

An aftershock shook parts of the region again on Friday.

Just before 6 p.m., a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck 7 kilometers southwest of Gladstone, New Jersey, according to the USGS.

The USGS took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to announce initial reports of the aftershock.

At least 32 aftershocks measuring 1.8 or greater on the Richter scale occurred, according to USGS geophysicist Timothy Clements. It is possible that there are more, but they are not detected if they are below the 1.8 mark.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy spoke to X, formerly known as Twitter, to confirm that the state had felt an aftershock. He also shared some tips to help residents stay safe.

Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Director Dominic Meireles shared the following safety tips in the event of an aftershock:

Protect yourself immediately by falling to the ground, holding on to the ground, and taking cover. If you are inside, get down on your knees and hands, hold on to something sturdy such as a table or desk, and cover your head and neck with your arms. If you are driving in a car, stop the car and set the parking brake. If you are in bed, turn face down and cover your head with a pillow. If you are outside, stay outside and stay away from buildings. If you are inside, stay inside, no don't run outside and avoid entrances. Do not attempt to evacuate the building

This comes hours after a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck Tewksbury, New Jersey, on Friday morning.

The NBC10 crew experienced the aftershock

NBC10's Brian Sheehan was standing waiting for NBC10 News' live broadcast at 6 p.m. when the ground shook beneath him.

The crew could hear the rumble and see the camera shaking as a young man exited the general store to get away from the building.

The aftershock was described as what appeared to be a complete jackhammer.

A man came out of his brother-in-law's restaurant to share what he experienced with NBC10.

“We all grabbed each other. This was the third time today people grabbed each other to make sure we were okay,” Rick Sunday said.

According to US Geological Survey forecasts, more aftershocks are expected during the next week.

The agency took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to say that expected aftershocks could measure 3.0 or more on the Richter scale.
