A New York earthquake and a solar eclipse go head-to-head on SNL

What is more impressive – a few minutes of shaking or the world plunging into darkness in the middle of the day?

That was the question Saturday Night Live pitted a New York earthquake against a solar eclipse during the final round of skits this weekend.

The solar eclipse — portrayed by Kenan Thompson in a giant pancake-like headdress — went head-to-head with the 4.8-magnitude earthquake, played by Marcelo Hernandez wearing a seismograph T-shirt and hat emblazoned with New York landmarks.

During the Weekend Update segment, hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che grilled the duo.

The quake boasted that its tremors caused people to “stop work for five – or even six – minutes to text their friends: 'Did you just feel something?'”

He quipped that the quake had caused the flight to be delayed by half an hour – instead of the usual hour delay.

Quake then bragged about how he had “made his way” to the top of the headlines.

Then the eclipse intervenes and accuses the earthquake of stealing its lights.

“You want to do a little shaking and try to steal my thunder. “Well, what are you going to do when a solar eclipse happens to you?” Thompson said, using Hulk Hogan’s old wrestling taunt. “On Monday, all of America will be covered in eternal darkness.”

With their best professional wrestling impressions, the duo eventually decided to team up, with Earthquake agreeing to shake again on Monday during the eclipse.

“This will be the Bible!” Thompson said. “This is the thing that made the ancients throw a virgin into a volcano.”

This was not their only point of agreement, as they also decided that the city's response to the earthquake was lackluster at best.

“Well, don't worry, I'm sure Mayor Adams will have this completely under control,” Thompson said, before he and Quake burst into laughter.

City officials, including Mr. Adams, faced questions about why the city sent an emergency text message 30 minutes after the quake, according to The New York Times.

The earthquake did not cause any known casualties or cause major structural damage. It was the largest in the city for 140 years.

The solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8 and will be visible in areas of 15 states, Mexico's Pacific coast, and northeastern Canada.

Nearly 31 million people live within the path of totality — where the total eclipse will be visible — and another 150 million are within 200 miles of it, according to NASA.

New York State is on track to completion, but not the city. If anyone wanted to watch the sun disappear behind the moon, they would have to drive upstate or Buffalo to do so.
