Officials are investigating two homes that may have been damaged by the 4.8 magnitude earthquake

Homeowners across New Jersey are still dealing with the aftermath of the April 5 earthquake. Not surprisingly, one of the homeowners dealing with the damage lives in Readington, the epicenter of the quake.

Inside Regency at Readington, an adult apartment complex, Rachel Ellintock inspected her home after the 4.8 magnitude quake. I found a new crack in the basement floor six to seven feet long.

She was showing her friend the damage on Friday night when they felt the first aftershock, one of more than 50 aftershocks the area will experience.

“I showed it to him downstairs, and that's when the first really big aftershock hit. It was like two explosions, so we ran up the stairs,” Ellintock says. “The next morning we got out of bed and when I got out of bed I said, 'Wow, this “Happens again.” “It was subtle, but the house was definitely shaking.”

The rumbling was felt throughout the state. Twenty-five miles away in Berkeley Heights, another home may have been damaged by the quake. Fire officials were called to a home along Maple Street where a crack was discovered in the basement wall. This house had to be evacuated.

Fire Chief James Hopkins says they were looking at the earthquake as a possible cause.

“It could have contributed to it, but there's no way to say for sure. It could be hydrostatic issues like moisture in the soil and things like that,” Hopkins says.

The homeowner will be able to return to the home once repairs are made.
