San Francisco celebrates the 118th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake with a ceremony emphasizing preparedness

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — San Francisco is marking the 118th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake and fires that nearly destroyed the city.

Every year on April 18, a moment of silence is held at 5:11 a.m. at the Lota Fountain on Market Street in memory of those who lost their lives in the 7.8 magnitude earthquake. More than 3,000 people were killed in the earthquake and fires, and hundreds of thousands lost their homes.

Lota served as a meeting place for citizens to reunite with their loved ones after the earthquake. It is the oldest surviving monument from that day.

The ceremony also included the sounding of sirens for 30 seconds at 5:12 a.m., the exact moment the earthquake struck. As part of the ceremony, many attendees dress in Victorian-era clothing.

There was former Mayor Willie Brown, the SFFD, the SFPD, the San Francisco Sheriff's Office, as well as the Emergency Management Division.

This year, the city honored the late Senator Dianne Feinstein, who served as mayor of San Francisco from 1978 to 1988.

Officials say we need to remember what happened 118 years ago and be prepared when the next big earthquake comes.

After the ceremony on Market Street, everyone headed to Dolores Park for the annual gilding of the fire hydrant that saved the Mission District.
