The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said that an undersea earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 shook Indonesia's West Java province on Saturday evening, without causing giant waves.

The agency said that the earthquake occurred at 23:29 Jakarta time (1629 GMT) on Saturday, and its epicenter was located 151 kilometers southwest of the Garut region and at a depth of 10 kilometers.

He added that residents of Jakarta, the nearby capital of Indonesia, and neighboring Banten province, in addition to the provinces of Central Java, Yogyakarta and East Java, also felt the tremors of the earthquake.

In West Java province, the magnitude of the quake was felt at magnitude IV MMI (Modified Merkley Intensity) in Sukabumi Town and Tasikmalaya Town, and magnitude III to IV MMI in Bandung City, the capital of West Java Province, the agency said.

The Xinhua News Agency reported that the agency did not issue any tsunami warning because the tremors would not lead to giant waves.
