Official: Water caused landslide in Teton Pass, not earthquake – LocalNews8.com

JACKSON, Wyo. (KIVI) – There has been speculation online that earthquakes played a role in the collapse of the Teton Pass. Highway officials say that hypothesis doesn't seem likely.

There have been no major earthquakes in the area in the past two weeks according to the latest seismic activity map.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation suspects the landslide was caused by water.

“There was always a little creek at the base of the slide, the base of this little slope and that's actually the original material that became saturated,” said Bob Hammond, a WYDOT engineer. “It was a reddish kind of silt material versus some of the graded backfill that had gotten to the top of it over the years, I think some of the spring water had come through and found different paths over the years and actually got to where it needed to be that the water was the big factor that changed “Things.”

Teton Pass collapsed on Saturday, closing the highway. On Thursday, June 6, authorities noticed large cracks appearing in the asphalt. They closed the highway to make repairs and assess the situation. The road was opened later that evening. Then, on Friday, a mudslide at mile 15 blocked the road.

Engineers are now considering creating a bypass road around the collapsed area. They hope the turn will be ready in weeks, not months.
