School District 46 discusses safety and growth through new classroom additions and seismic retrofits

Capital projects including the expansion of Gibson Elementary School and a new child care facility in Cedar Grove

Four additional classrooms at Gibson Elementary School and a new child care facility were among the major capital projects for School District 46 (SD46) discussed during the district's Operations Committee meeting on May 28.

Kate Kerr, SD46 Supervisor, explained that the three items on the capital list require more than $1 million and explained that recommendations approved by SD46 are sent to the Department of Education, which prioritizes and manages the funding accordingly.

Gibson expanded

The first item is to expand Gibson Elementary School by adding four classrooms. Kerr emphasized that the school has already exceeded its capacity and is continuing to grow.

She also stressed that removing the portables in the school grounds would be a welcome change.

“It improves the functionality of the school, keeps everyone in one place and integrates the learning environment,” Kerr said.

She added that this is the first of many developments the board will see to accommodate future development at Gibson.

Sechelt Alternative School for Earthquake Mitigation

Seismic retrofitting of the Sechelt Alternative School building was also discussed.

Defining this as an “ongoing request,” Kerr said this was intended to significantly enhance the building’s seismic resilience and support the safety and well-being of students.

Cedar Grove Elementary Child Care Facility

SD46 knew that establishing a child care facility in Cedar Grove would address critical needs within the community and provide essential services, Kerr said. She added that the proposed location would allow for “seamless” before and after school care.

If a child care facility is built from district property, they would need a twenty-year lease to meet department guidelines, Kerr said.

She added that it has not yet been decided whether SD46 will run the childcare facility.

The committee approved the list that will be presented to the school board meeting.
