Struggling Minnesota United and Earthquakes need wins

Minnesota United FC have not won in their last nine matches.

But they're still in better shape than the San Jose Earthquakes.

The two teams meet on Saturday evening in St. Paul, Minnesota, where Minnesota United will be looking to turn things around.

Minnesota (8-10-6, 30 points) has only two draws since its last win on June 1.

“There are hard facts on the table, but we have to move forward,” said Loons coach Eric Ramsay. “We have to work together to correct the situation.”

Short memories may be the key for Minnesota United, which conceded two late goals in a 3-2 home defeat to D.C. United on Wednesday night.

“The most important thing is to forget what happened,” said Minnesota forward Teemu Pukki. “Of course, we have to analyze the game, but the game is over now and the good thing is that the next game is in two days. Everyone just needs to know how to do their best on Saturday.”

San Jose (4-18-2, 14 points) is in last place in MLS. The Earthquakes have won just one of their last 12 games (1-10-1).

“I think we'll be in good enough shape to enable Minnesota to field a really strong lineup,” interim coach Ian Russell said, referring to the increasingly grueling physical and mental toll on his team.

San Jose captain Jackson Yueill, a midfielder, made his 200th MLS appearance for the team in Wednesday night's 1-0 loss to visiting Houston.

“I felt we missed some passes that would have created big chances on goal,” Russell said. “I think it was more about the actual chances on goal.”

The Earthquakes, who conceded the only goal in the 86th minute of Wednesday's match, have not conceded a goal in three of their last five matches and have not scored more than one goal in any of those matches.

Minnesota hasn't scored a goal in nearly three months. The Loons have conceded three or more goals in four of their last seven games.

“It really reflects the position we've found ourselves in over the last eight or nine games,” Ramsay said. “Defending the box with real intensity and real aggression hasn't been the case.”

Pukki has scored four goals this season, including two in his last three games for a Minnesota team that has been productive for much of the season. The Loons have five players, led by Tani Oluwasi's eight goals, with four or more goals this season. Oluwasi has scored in three of his last four MLS games.

The return match between United and the Earthquakes is scheduled for late August in San Jose.
