Japan fears after warning of huge earthquake: What we know

A “major earthquake warning” was issued for the first time in Japan last week, sparking widespread concern and questions from residents.

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan's southern main island of Kyushu on Thursday. The quake caused no injuries or major damage, but it prompted officials at the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue a “major earthquake warning.”

Although Japan is accustomed to earthquakes, the new warning issued on August 8 indicated that another strong quake could strike near the Nankai Trough.

Following the 7.1-magnitude quake on Aug. 8 near the Nankai Trough, officials at the Japan Meteorological Agency said there was a 70% to 80% chance of another magnitude 8 or 9 quake occurring within the next 30 years. The odds are now “higher than usual” after last week’s quake.

But University of Tokyo seismologist Naoshi Hirata, who heads the Japan Meteorological Agency's team of experts, told residents the warning does not explicitly mean a major quake will occur at a specific time or place. He urged residents to remain prepared and vigilant.

In 2013, a government disaster prevention team warned that a magnitude 9.1 earthquake in the Nankai Trough could trigger a tsunami more than 10 metres (33 feet) high within minutes. Such an event could kill up to 323,000 people, destroy more than 2 million buildings and cause economic damage exceeding 220 trillion yen ($1.5 trillion) across vast areas of Japan’s Pacific coast.

Last week, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida canceled his plans for August 9-12 in response to a “massive earthquake warning.” The Japanese Fire and Disaster Management Agency has instructed 707 municipalities at risk from a potential earthquake in the Nankai Basin to reassess response strategies and evacuation plans.

Japan's Meteorological Agency said Monday that experts have not yet detected any unusual seismic activity that would indicate the possibility of a major earthquake.

However, the warning has raised concerns among some residents, with many canceling planned trips and stocking their homes with groceries and other emergency supplies.

Yoshiko Kudo and her husband, Shinya, spoke to The Associated Press about the counseling and their concerns, saying they were confused and unsure how worried they should be.

“We try not to overdo it. Too much worry is not good,” Yoshiko Kudo told The Associated Press.

Similarly, Shinya Kudo said, “We don’t know how to be prepared and continue living normally as the experts tell us.”
