President William Ruto has declared three days of national mourning in Kenya following a fire at a boarding school in Nyeri. On Friday morning, the Ministry of Education confirmed the death of seventeen students, while the vice president said 70 children were missing, so the number of dead could not be verified. It is believed that some of these children went to the local community to escape the fire, or were picked up by their parents without the knowledge of the schools. More than 150 students were in the dormitory when it caught fire around midnight. The average age of the victims was about nine years old, according to the police.
