Watch presenters react to the Los Angeles earthquake live on TV

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck north of Malibu in Southern California on Thursday, shocking live news anchors during their morning broadcast.

The quake struck at about 7:28 a.m. and was felt in Thousand Oaks, Calabasas and the Los Angeles area, with the epicenter closer to the Malibu Fault. On-air anchors who felt the quake mid-show included ABC7's Mark Cota-Robles and The Facility's James Jones.

Cota Robles had just started a segment about cinnamon in pumpkin spice season when the earthquake struck mid-sentence. “Oh, there’s been an earthquake,” he said. “That’s right. We’re shaking pretty good.” As the studio shook, the calm Cota Robles assumed the quake was a magnitude 3 or 4.

Jones, on the other hand, was fully committed to the task at hand this morning. The former NFL player was in discussions with Emmanuel Acho, LeShon McCoy and Chase Daniel about quarterback Baker Mayfield when the studio began shaking violently. Jones didn’t hold back and continued to watch the segment until his fellow analyst cut him off.

“Wait, James!” McCoy shouted. “It’s an earthquake! Speaking of Baker Mayfield, I almost lost my life!”

Daniel, who shared the footage on X, noted that this was the first earthquake he had ever witnessed.

Meanwhile, the Fox 11 morning news team in Los Angeles was following the quake live. Amanda Salas, Melvin Roberts and Jen Lammers calmly shared their observations from their turbulent morning. “This is an earthquake we just had, and it’s still going on,” Roberts said.

The quake comes as three major wildfires rage across Southern California, forcing thousands to evacuate their homes. It also comes at the end of a record-breaking heat wave in the region, with temperatures hitting 111 degrees in downtown Los Angeles and 124 degrees in Palm Springs.
