USGS Issues Status Report on Kilauea as Seismic Activity Increases

(BIVN) – Seismic activity increased on the Kilauea Volcano’s East-Middle Rift Zone Saturday evening, prompting the U.S. Geological Survey to issue an unscheduled status report.

Kilauea has not erupted, but scientists say ground deformation patterns to the west, or above Mount Pu'u, “suggest that another event may be occurring in this region,” with earthquakes occurring near the Makaupuhi crater.

The alert level for Kilauea Volcano has been maintained at Advisory by the USGS for the time being.

Earlier Saturday evening, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck Big Island, but it wasn’t strong enough to generate a tsunami or cause damage. Scientists believe the quake was linked to “the ongoing compact magma storage system beneath the Kilauea summit area, extending into the upper East Rift Zone, where magma intrusions have recently occurred.”

Following this event, earthquakes began to hit the Middle East Rift Zone, prompting the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory to issue a statement at 6:59 p.m. Hawaii time:

Increased seismic activity began at approximately 4 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time today, September 14, 2024, in the area between the craters of Pauahi and Makaupuhi. Since then, approximately 60 earthquakes have been detected, and over the past hour, the earthquake has been increasing in intensity, centered closer to the Makaupuhi crater in the Middle East Rift Zone. Beginning at approximately 6 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time this evening, ground deformation patterns west (upper) of Pauahue have begun to show changes indicative of crack growth, indicating the possibility of another intrusive event in this area (similar to events that occurred in this general area in July and August of this year). The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is closely monitoring the situation and will issue additional messages as needed. Currently, there are no signs of an imminent eruption; however, conditions can change quickly. Previous volcanic activity in this area of ​​the upper to middle Kilauea rift zone has typically occurred between Hiiaka and Maunaulo craters in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

Seismic activity and ground deformation rates beneath the Lower East Fault Zone and Southwest Fault Zone remain low. Current activity is limited to the Upper to Middle East Fault Zone of Kilauea.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has not yet announced any new closures due to increased volcanic unrest.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said it will continue to monitor Kilauea for any changes and will issue additional notices as needed.
