The northern interior Apennines are a region with a dominant fault system running from NNW-SE, but dissected and offset by several oblique structures and lines from EW to NE-SW. Knowledge of the nature, origin, activity and role of these transverse structures in current tectonic movements is limited and controversial. To better define the location, subsurface shape and kinematics of the faults associated with the Livorno-Empoli lineament, one of the main transverse structures in the northern Apennines, we analyzed seismicity in western Tuscany. In the Viareggio basin, we identified and relocated two distinct seismic clusters as well as calculated 12 new focal mechanisms. The results show that the clusters consist of several swarms from 2006, 2015, 2016 and 2021. The events were between 2 and 15 km deep and were located along a southeast-southwest-sloping fault system that cuts through the Viareggio basin. The focal mechanisms exhibit oblique vertical slip. We interpret the fault system to form a connection between the Viareggio Basin and the Lucca Basin to the east and to continue offshore. The results show that transverse faults in the northern interior Apennines cause earthquakes, with the fault length, location and coastal to marine nature indicating reactivation of pre-existing structures.
