A 2.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded near Canyon Lake

A minor earthquake reportedly shook Canyon Lake, an unincorporated community in Comal County, on Thursday.

Canyon Lake is located about 43 miles northeast of San Antonio and 65 miles southwest of Austin by road.

The earthquake was recorded at a magnitude of 2.1 on the Richter scale, and it appeared at 11:55 a.m., according to the Database.Earth website, which provides data for countries around the world.

This activity is considered a “surface earthquake,” as it occurred at a depth of about 1.9978 kilometers, or about 1.2 miles, below the Earth’s surface. Shallow earthquakes range in depth from 0 to 70 km.

Shallow quakes tend to be more damaging than deep quakes, according to the Associated Press, because seismic waves from deep quakes travel to the surface, losing energy along the way.

“I don't remember there ever being one there. “Plenty south of the city, but not the Canyon Lake area,” Sheri Krusel commented on a Facebook post in response to the news.

Texas meteorologist Chris Suchan noted on Facebook that most people wouldn't notice the quake in Comal County.

Earthquakes are usually felt when they reach a magnitude of 2.5 to 5.4. For those registering at magnitude 2.5 or less, the effects are usually not felt but can be recorded by a seismograph, according to Michigan Technological University.

“There were 11 incidents last week near Falls City and they are fracking in that area again. “In February, we had over 60 people,” Jason Segura commented on Suchan's Facebook post.

Data from the USGS indicates 13 earthquakes occurred near Falls City in the past week, and two were recorded on the day the user commented on the post.

“Fluid injected at depth is sometimes hydraulically connected to faults. When this happens, fluid pressures increase within the fault, neutralizing the frictional forces acting on the faults. This makes earthquakes more likely to occur on them, according to the USGS.

Falls City is located in the Eagle Ford Shale region, known for gas and oil production.

The US Geological Survey reports that the recent increase in earthquakes in the central United States is due primarily to the disposal of waste fluids that are a byproduct of oil production.

Reports from KXAN indicate that there are clusters where recorded earthquakes are more common — especially in West Texas.

West Texas has the largest number of fault lines in the state.

Although residents likely didn't notice the recent earthquake in Comal County, a 5.1 magnitude quake reported last week near Midland was felt throughout the Austin metro area, according to social media posts related to the news.
