Millions in California are participating in the 2024 Great ShakeOut exercise to prepare for earthquakes

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) – Thursday morning, millions across California descended, covered and held on for the 2024 Great ShakeOut drills.

The exercise lasted for one minute and began at 10:17.

“When we have the threat of an emergency, we want to be ready for it when it comes. That's the whole goal here. Is to raise awareness and then encourage people to prepare,” said Jonathan Drucker, Kern County Fire Department engineer. “For an earthquake, so if it happens, we're not struggling to catch it at the time.”

The Kern County Fire Department was one of several places in the South Valley that participated in the drill. The department's protocol consists of evacuation route, staffing numbers, and safety discussions.

Ben Deci, chief information officer for the California Seismological Service, said there has been an uptick in earthquakes this year. However, he said this is not something Californians should be surprised by.

“Almost every place within the state is within 30 miles of an active fault,” Deci said. “We live in earthquake country. Californians know that, and they should know that if they don't get an earthquake, they will get another one.”

To reduce the risk of danger at home, Deci suggested moving heavy tires high on the walls or anything hanging above the bed. For older homes, he recommended homeowners consider stabilizing and strengthening their homes to make them more resilient to earthquakes.

“People like to hang that big, heavy mirror above their bed,” Deci said. “A lot of times, it can be a real source of danger during an earthquake, because if it's not fastened well to the wall, it could fall and fall on someone and cause serious injury.”

According to ShakeOut's record history, more than 10.5 million people in California have participated.
