A NSW mine has been rocked by an earthquake for the second time in three months

A 4.1 magnitude earthquake has struck beneath a mine in upper New South Wales.

Reports of a tremor began at 1.12pm at Muswellbrook, near the town of Edderton.

The epicenter of the quake appears to be located directly beneath the Mount Uther coal mine near Edderton, according to the Australian Geosciences Authority.

This is the third earthquake felt in the area this year, as a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck the same mine in September. (Earth sciences)

The earthquake occurred at a depth of three kilometers and was felt by about 400 people north and south of the epicenter, according to the Australian Geosciences Authority.

Residents of Newcastle and Singleton said they felt the earthquake, as did some people in Sydney.

This is the third earthquake felt in the area this year, as a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck the same mine in September.

Another earthquake rocked a mine in Denman in August.
