Walker was hit by a 2.4 magnitude earthquake Monday night

WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – Walker County residents say they felt the ground trembling Monday night as the northeastern part of the county was hit by an earthquake.

The US Geological Survey reported that a 2.4-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Sipsey area on Monday evening.

Gilda Watson lives in the Empire community of East Sipsey.

She said her dogs “got a little weird” when this happened.

“The deaf pit growled, and the lab barked,” Watson said. “For a moment I felt movement. And that was it.”

The quake occurred at 10 p.m. Monday two and a half miles west of Sibsey. According to USGS information, the earthquake was shallow at a depth of just over a mile.

The Alabama Geological Survey (GSA) says earthquakes in the eastern half of the United States are fairly common.

“Most of the earthquakes we see in Alabama are associated with the Southern Appalachian Seismic Zone, which runs along the Appalachian Mountains from the northeastern corner to the central part of the state, and the Bahamas Seismic Fault Zone in southern Alabama,” GSA says on its website. Website.
