Four successive earthquakes hit Cianjur, BMKG: No damage reported

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Residents of Sibibar District, Cianjur Regency, West Java, experienced four consecutive earthquakes today, Thursday, November 21, 2024.

The first tremor occurred at 8:17 am, with a magnitude of 2.2. This earthquake originated on land, 15 kilometers southeast of the center of Cianjur district. The earthquake was felt on the MMI II intensity scale, causing some hanging objects to sway.

The earthquake's coordinates were 6.96 degrees south, longitude 107.15 degrees east, and a depth of 5 kilometers.

As noon approached, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded another 2.9 magnitude tremor in the same area. The earthquake occurred at 11:25 am, and its epicenter was on the ground, 17 kilometers southeast of the center of Cianjur district.

The shallow earthquake was caused by active fault activities at a depth of 9 km. This earthquake was felt on a scale III MMI by Siberian residents.

A few minutes later, at 11:27 a.m., another 3.0 magnitude earthquake occurred, felt by residents of the Sipiber area, also on the III MMI intensity scale.

The earthquake originated on land and was caused by an active fault, 21 km southeast of the Cianjur district centre, at a shallow depth of 10 km.

One minute later, at 11:28 a.m., residents of the Siberian area again felt a 3.0 MMI magnitude 3.0 earthquake, similar to passing trucks.

According to BMKG, the earthquake occurred on land, 15 kilometers southeast of the center of Cianjur district. The earthquake was classified as superficial, with a depth of 5 kilometers, at coordinates 6.96 degrees south and longitude 107.15 degrees east.

“The earthquake was due to active faulting activities,” said the head of BMKG District II in Tangerang, Hartanto, in a written statement on Thursday, November 21.

According to BMKG, there were no reports of damaged buildings as a result of the earthquake. As of noon, no aftershocks had been detected.
