Yerington earthquake shakes northern Nevada

YERINGTON, Nev. (KOLO) – A large earthquake struck Yerington on Monday, reminding residents of seismic activity in the area. As aftershocks continue to be felt, experts warn that more are likely to occur.

If you didn't feel it yourself, people on social media were quick to comment on the 5.7-magnitude tremor that could be felt through aftershocks across the state. One X user made a comment about how the force wasn't too intense for his children, while another said his dogs refused to leave his side.

The USGS says the quake was documented at 3:08 p.m., and its epicenter was measured 14 miles northeast of Yerington — about 65 miles southeast of Carson City. But the force of the quake sent tremors that were felt all the way to Las Vegas.

“This is an area of ​​Nevada that has had a lot of big earthquakes in the last century,” said Christy Rowe, director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory. “We've been having a small group of small earthquakes over the last couple of weeks.”

The Silver State is no stranger to earthquakes because of the fault line that runs through the area, which constantly releases built-up tectonic pressure, Rowe says. We rank third in seismic activity after California and Alaska.
