AP Source: NBA players decide to continue the season at Disney

Lake Buena Vista, Florida – (AFP) – A person familiar with the situation said NBA players decided on Thursday that they wanted to continue the season, reaching a consensus one day after three matches were postponed after the season in protest of racial injustice.

It is unclear when the season will resume, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither the league nor the National Basketball Association have announced anything publicly.

The NBA Referees Board meets separately on Thursday to decide on next steps. There were three matches in the schedule for Thursday, and the league did not immediately say whether it would be postponed. But with players walking out of their meeting at noon, and the first match for the Triple Header set to begin at 4 PM ET, it seemed unlikely that today’s schedule would not be disrupted.

The person said one potential remedy for the schedule was to play the three games that were postponed on Friday and the three games scheduled for Thursday, although that has not been determined.

Starting with the Milwaukee Bucks, who refused to play Wednesday against the Orlando Magic, players from six teams made extraordinary decisions to protest the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a black man, on Sunday in Kenosha, Wisconsin. In his back while three of his sons were looking at him.

NBA players didn’t just come to Disney to resume their season. They also wanted social reform, as did other sports leagues – many followed the NBA leadership on Wednesday by canceling matches. Some NFL teams did the same Thursday, and chose not to train.

It followed a similar pattern to what happened in March: The NBA was the first league to close due to the coronavirus pandemic, and other sports have followed too.

“The most important thing we all understand is that if we don’t play, what will we do? What are we going to do to show and help what is happening outside this bubble?” Boston Celtics striker Grant Williams said shortly before the Bucks vs. Magic.

Instead, Bucks players stayed in the locker room, and finally showed up hours later to read a statement demanding action from lawmakers and encouraging citizens to vote.

They changed the narrative across the entire sports scene, focusing directly on social justice reform in protest of Blake’s shooting.

While players and teams from baseball, WNBA and MLS sat outside their competitions Wednesday night, NBA players and coaches met for nearly three hours at a Disney hotel to determine next steps, including whether the season should continue. They did not reach a consensus, a person familiar with the meeting told the AP, on condition of anonymity because the details have not been released publicly.

Further talks took place in the early hours of Thursday, followed by a meeting of players that morning to decide whether to continue the season.

The Western & Southern Open will not be played on Thursday, as the American Tennis Association, along with ATP and WTA Tours, announced that play will be paused after twice Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has already said she will not play her semi-final match.

“I don’t expect anything drastic to happen without playing, but if I can start a conversation in a predominantly white sport, I consider that a step in the right direction,” Osaka wrote on Twitter. “Watching the ongoing genocide of blacks at the hands of the police honestly makes me sick.”

Before coming to Disney, many NBA players wrestled for weeks over whether it was right to play, fearing that returning to the games would draw attention to the deaths of, among others, Briona Taylor and George Floyd in recent months.

They finally decided to come to the bubble and play the televised games that would give them the biggest platformer, although some now at least wonder if this is still true.

It now appears that they will find out if this is the case.
